I fixed photocopiers before I retired, so I always had a bit of time to think over the customer complaint while driving to the site. That thinking led me astray many times, fixing what I thought was the problem, not necessarily the problem the machine actually had.

Eric, a “potential difference” is just a fancy way of saying subtraction. For example, say there are 20 particles here and 17 over there, then the “potential difference” is 20-17 or 3.

Great video - I was hoping you might do another proof by running a jumper cable (or other known good heavy gauge cable) from the starter to the battery terminal, and repeating the voltage drop test. But not sure how practical it is to do so on that car.

This problem happens to my friends car i was fixing before we were thinking it was the alternator and battery between them but so we installed another alternator and another battery only to last a few weeks and happens again 2 times in 1 month Unitl I recheck fuses cables and i noticed the positive terminal end was not really making good contact there was my little big problem solved Now its fixed Always check terminal battery end you never know what will be done to it

Lesson learned right there.its hard to not jump right to the fix when the flat rate clock is ticking.but it could save me buying a starter .I have to tell myself to slow down to go fast.

I'd like to see a part 2 also, I can just imagine those positive battery cables going all over the place under the hood.

I knew last week that the cable connection at the battery was bad.

Since you called us out... I'll toot my own horn: I probably would have discovered the bad connection very bright and early. Any time I get a car with voltage problems, my habit is to immediately wiggle the battery cables. Maybe it's a demographic thing? For whatever reason, many people in my area don't like tight battery connections. I come across that so often that I've come to expect it.

I had a Chevy S-10 on which I found a corroded starter cable. I thought I would just trim off an inch or so and would be good. Not so. I had my heavy cable cutters and I cut that first inch and still saw corrosion. Another inch, then another inch and another. by the time I found good clean copper I was 1/3 the way down the cable. Getting at the starter to replace the whole cable was, for me and my situation, going to be a difficult job. So.... I went to Home Depot and found I could get a inline cable splice specifically for that gauge of cable. It was more or less a heavy cylinder of brass with allen screws and a heavy duty heat shrink tube to cover it all up. It was a piece of cake to install and I used my heavy duty heat gun to contract the heat shrink tube till the gooey stuff came out both ends. I think that "patch" would have lasted forever, except the pickup was hit and totaled while it was sitting parked by someone with a run away truck with no breaks. 🥺 I liked that pickup.😥

And so you really appreciate that new starter I also replaced the battery cables. MOST SHOPS

I was thinking, with a drop like that, just engage the starter until it starts to smoke to find the problem.

I would have done three used engine swaps and then found the corroded cables by accident. If I'm lucky.

Anyone on here that says they would have checked that before is full of crap!! They would have checked it after they put a new starter in, when that didn't work 😂

I would have checked the battery terminal before I pulled the intake manifold but that's just how I roll.

With the amount of starters that I have replaced on these old Hondas, I probably would have been out a starter, too.
